About Us

Who are we?
The Moorgate Talks was started by a group of Christians who all work in the Moorgate area. We are a group from a range of church denominations but are united by our desire to see Jesus’ message proclaimed to those who haven’t heard it, and our conviction that Christians need to be equipped by the Bible’s teaching to maintain Jesus’ priorities in their workplaces.
Our elders are Alfred King, Paul Hawkins, Brian Brown and Philip Brentford, and staff members are Philip Brentford, Alfred King and Clare Jackson (all part-time).

Why start mid-week Bible talks in the Moorgate area?
There are mid-week Bible talks at St Helen’s Bishopsgate and St Botolph’s Aldersgate (The Aldersgate Talks), but with increasingly short windows for lunch, walking 10 minutes to either of these venues can be too much for some. Moorgate and the surrounding area is a thriving hub of businesses, charities, shops, transport links, educational institutions, bars and restaurants which daily bring in thousands of people. We want there to be an opportunity for these people to hear Jesus’ words only a few minutes away from their door.

What we believe
This commonly-used doctrinal statement is a useful summary of what we believe:
  •  The divine inspiration and infallibility of Holy Scripture, as originally given, and its supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

  • The unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in the Godhead.

  • The universal sinfulness and guilt of human nature since the fall, rendering man subject to God’s wrath and condemnation.

  • The conception of Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit and his birth of the virgin Mary.

  • Redemption from the guilt, penalty and power of sin, only through the sacrificial death, as our representative and substitute, of Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God.

  • The bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

  • The necessity of the work of the Holy Spirit to make the death of Christ effective in the individual sinner, granting him repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ.

  • The indwelling and work of the Holy Spirit in the believer.

  • The expectation of the personal return of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Giving to support this work
The weekly running of The Moorgate Talks is funded by the sacrificial financial giving of Christians who regularly come to the talks. However, if you are looking into Christianity or you are just visiting, please be reassured that we are not after your money. The information below is for regulars only.
Why give?
‘For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich’ (2 Corinthians 8:9)
Christians, therefore, do not give out of duty (to earn God’s favour), but in response to God’s grace – as a joyful response to all that God has lavished on us. Giving is not limited to financial giving – Jesus wants his followers to be generous with their energy, skills, time and homes – but if we’re able, giving includes our money.  You can find our latest financial update here
